Waterloo East High Girls Track fundraising for new uniforms
WATERLOO (KWWL) -
Besides working hard on the track, the Waterloo East High girls track team is also working hard off the track to fundraise for new uniforms.
"I always feel if the kids feel confident and look confident, they'll run confident," said Head East High Girls Track Coach Richard Carter.
The girls track team is specifically trying to buy new warm-ups, which are more expensive. The team does get a budget from the school district, but Carter says a lot of that money is already spent for the season.
"Every athletic program has a budget and our expenses go from meets to paying officials to uniforms to equipment to trips," said Carter.
The varsity girls typically wear warm-ups that are a few years old. But some of the girls are still wearing sweats from the late 90s.
"When I first started when we ended we had 10 to 15 the first year. We have 30 now. So if we keep increasing the way we are we're just running out of uniforms for the girls," said Richard Carter.
The goal is to raise $4,000 to buy new varsity warm-ups. Then the current varsity uniforms can go to the J.V. The community can help by making a donation to East High Girls Track, you must specify it is the girls track program.
"Whether it's $5 or $1, if someone wants to donate, we'd be really thankful," said Carter.
The Runner's Flat in Cedar Falls has already helped the team out by donating seven pairs of track shoes. Five of those pairs were given to girls who couldn't afford to buy new shoes.
The track team is about mid-way through its season. Even if all the money isn't raised to buy the uniforms for this season, Carter hopes to have them for all of next year.
You can also help raise money for the track team by eating at Buffalo Wild Wings in Cedar Falls on Monday, May 6th and Wednesday, May 8th. On those two days, 10 percent of all food sales will go to the track team. Just tell your server you're there to support the track team.
