Dubuque Dalzell Field hosts first track meet since renovations

It has been a year since renovations began on Dalzell Field in Dubuque, a field home to both Dubuque Senior High School and Hempstead High School athletics. The $10 million renovation funded by the one cent sales tax fund began in April of 2012. Thursday evening, the first track meet was held on the newly renovated field. For Dubuque School District Athletic Director, Amy Hawkins, it was an exciting event.

"I think everyone is just excited to be out at the new facility and running on the track and I don't even think they care about the weather." said Hawkins.

Jeff Gallery was one of many parents present at Thursday's track meet. His son has been involved in track all four years of high school. He says his son was excited to run on the new track.

"He's excited about it, all the kids are. I mean times should be much better. I mean right now we have an event now that we are going to be able to use all 8 lanes and that hasn't been the case for years," said Gallery.

Before renovations, Dalzell Field's was six lanes, but Gallery says not all six lanes were used because of their deteriorating conditions.

"I was at a Junior High meet here years ago and because we only had four usable lanes. It was an event that should have probably ended at 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. and they would regularly stretch to 10:30 - 11 p.m. " said Gallery.

The new eight lane track made of rubber will allow Dalzell Field to host the district track meet, a meet the track would be unable to host otherwise. Although renovations on the field are complete, renovations are still being done on the field's east plaza. The plaza is expected to be completed at the end of May.
