Saints win, Black Hawks lose in the USHL playoff openers


Bad news for the Waterloo Black Hawks, but good news for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, as the United States Hockey League playoffs got underway Wednesday night for the two local favorites.

The Fargo Force snapped the Waterloo Black Hawks 8-game winning streak Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory in the first round of the U-S-H-L playoffs in Fargo.

The Black Hawks got on the board first on a 1st period power play goal from Zach Stepan at the 11:17 mark..The assists from Chris Leibinger and Ian McCoshen.

Fargo scored twice in the second period to take 2-1 lead. The Black Hawks got a 3rd period power play goal from Taylor Cammarata at the 14:50 mark of the 3rd. Cammarata got assists from Ian McCoshen and Justin Kloos.

Fargo scored the game-winner on an Austin Ortega goal at the 18:25 mark in the 3rd to secure the 3-2 victory.

Fargo has now beaten the Black Hawks in 5 of their 6 meetings this season.

Game 2 Friday night in Fargo. Game 3 Sunday afternoon at 3 at Young Arena in Waterloo. 

For the Dubuque Fighting Saints, the regular season Anderson Cup Champions, they got goals from 5 different players Wednesday night at the Mystique Ice Arena-in Dubuque.

The Saints got goals from Frank DiChiara, Joseph Manno, Mike Symatula, Adam Gilmour and Karson Kuhlman.

Game 2 is Friday night in Dubuque at the Mystique Ice Arena. Face off Friday night at 7:05

In other Wednesday night USHL playoff action, Green Bay beat Youngstown, 3-1, and Lincoln shut out Sioux Falls, 4-0.
