State Patrol will use bait cars used to catch car thieves

Authorities in Iowa are taking new steps to catch car thieves.

The Iowa State Patrol announced Tuesday that bait cars equipped with GPS tracking and in-car video surveillance will be set up in communities around the state.

The make and model of the vehicles is top secret.

"We don't want people to know what the cars look like, we actually want them to try to get to the car. They're normal looking cars. They're going to fit into any neighborhood. The whole point is so people know it could be set anywhere," said Trooper Dave Garrison, with the Iowa State Patrol.

Between 2006 and 2010, Iowa law enforcement reported over 22,000 incidents of motor vehicle theft in Iowa.
