North Liberty to bypass storm water to protect homes

NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -

The City of North Liberty says they have gotten approval from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to bypass their normal sewer collection process to protect homes.

Nick Bergus, Communications Director for North Liberty, says Wednesday's rains have increased the flow of water through the sewer system by nearly 400 percent.

To prevent sewers from backing up into homes, the city will send storm water directly into Muddy Creek. Bergus says this will keep the water from bottlenecking at the city's treatment plant.

They will return to normal once the threat to homes and other property has subsided.

Residents are asked to do their part by reducing their water usage on Wednesday night.
