Iowa runners return home, recount stories from Boston Marathon

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Tammy Greiner of Reinbeck was living her dream running in the Boston Marathon.

"It's one of those things you have to have on your bucket list if you're a runner," Greiner said.

Greiner could have never imagined the nightmare that would ensue.

"We heard a big boom and all of us kind of looked around in that direction, it was toward the finish line, and we saw this big puff of smoke," Greiner said.

Greiner stood just four blocks away from the origin of Monday's attacks.

"I think everybody was a little panicked at that point, and you know, you heard sirens and just kind of chaos from there," Greiner said.

She crossed the finish line about 15 minutes ahead of the chaos.

She says she was never worried about her safety, but was more concerned about that of her husband and parents, who were there to watch.

Finding family was made even more difficult because cell phone service dropped.

"It seemed like forever, probably 10 or 15 minutes, but immediately I see my husband coming down the street and I'm bawling, thank goodness you guys are okay," Greiner said.

Like Greiner, today many Iowa runners in the Boston Marathon are returning home.

Craig Brophy of Cedar Rapids is one of those.

He was all too close to the explosions as well.  A day later he is still in disbelief that it all even happened.

"It's kind of unreal that I was even there," he said.

Hard to believe, but many happy to be home safely.

"I feel lucky that our family was safe and really pray to God  everybody will heal from it.  It's just such a scary situation," Greiner said.
