Eastern Iowa marathon will continue as scheduled; extra security planned

MARION (KWWL) -

An Eastern Iowa race will continue as scheduled this weekend. The inaugural Marion Rotary Marathon for Shoes is set for this Sunday. The recent explosions at the Boston Marathon have race organizers planning extra security.

Jim Dwyer is the manager of Running Wild in Cedar Rapids. His customers are friends. After the explosions at the Boston Marathon he spent Monday afternoon trying to reach out to those he knew in the race.

"It's tough to see what the motive would be behind that," said Dwyer.

For months Dwyer has been helping plan a marathon right here in Eastern Iowa. The goal was to give local runners a chance to qualify for bigger races like the Boston Marathon while helping a good cause, a rotary club's Shoes for Kids program.

The attack in Boston brings new concerns for the Marion race, scheduled for this weekend.

"Tensions wills be tight," said Dwyer. "I know it's not as large of a scale as the Boston Marathon but, and it's our first time putting on a marathon, but you always prepare for the worst."

Linn-Mar High School is the start and finish line for Sunday's Marion Rotary Marathon for Shoes. Police Chief Harry Daugherty says there's always a police presence at races, however, with the recent events in Boston, he's planning on bringing in extra security---the city's K9 explosives unit.

"There is no issue," said Daugherty. "I just want everybody to know we're doing everything we possibly can at the police department for this marathon to go very smoothly. And I want people to know it's safe and ok to come out to the event."

The chief says there's no reason to expect problems at the marathon.

"We've never had any problems with any events here before and I don't expect that" said Daugherty.

Race organizers have one final planning meeting and say they plan to discuss security.

The marathon is a weekend-long event with a 5K, community bike ride and a pasta dinner on Saturday. Sunday's marathon will step off at 7a.m. followed by the marathon festival.
