Three brothers from Cedar Falls say they are safe after Monday's explosions at the Boston Marathon.

David Sevcik, Daniel Sevcik and Joey Sevcik had all completed the race and were headed back to their hotel when the blasts happened.

"We were shocked when we started getting a bunch of text messages to see if we were OK, but the software service in Boston is not working at all," Joey told KWWL by phone Monday.

The brothers run with the Iowa State Running Club, and say everyone they are with is safe. Joey finished the race about a half hour before the explosions happened.

"You hear about stuff like this, but you never expect it to be somewhere where you're going to be -- especially not like a marathon or anything," said Daniel. "There's a lot of people, but it's just kind of a feel-good event. You know everyone is celebrating an accomplishment, so you don't expect something like this."

The family has attended the Boston Marathon before, and the boys' mother Lisa Sevcik says the explosion happened near the place they've watched in the past.

"Last year our family went out there and we weren't that far from the finish line," she said. "We were probably half a mile ourselves, and just thinking about if that would have happened last year -- and we would've been right there."
