Taxpayers scramble to get paperwork done on time

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Many taxpayers scrambled over the weekend to get their paperwork done. Sunday brought a steady stream of customers to an H&R Block office in Cedar Rapids. Some taxpayers pushed the deadline to the limit because they just didn't have the money to pay to get their taxes done.

"It costs so much to have them filled out that I waited until I could come up with the money," said Dennis Irey, of Cedar Rapids.

Others just weren't worried about the April 15th deadline.

"I'm doing them today because tomorrow is the last day to do them," said Misty Bisbin, of Cedar Rapids. "It's not a reason that I waited, not really."

Tax professionals say that was the attitude of a lot of the people walking through their doors. Others came in because they filed but there was an error.

"Some of the majority of the mistakes would be if they added a child in a divorce situation and the other one wanted to claim them so we would have to amend the child from one to the other," said Tammy Mims of H&R Block.

The tax pros at H&R Block say they often find errors on peoples' forms. That's why they offer free second looks.

"We can find mistakes that other people have made and we're happily filing amendments for them for them to be able to get their money back," said Mims.

For those who just can't file their taxes on time, the good news is you can instead file for an extension using Form 4868 which will give you until October 15, 2013, to get your paperwork in order.

"The reason they file an extension is because they don't have all their paperwork," said Mims. "They may be missing a W2 or some form and that makes it so that they can't file at this point."

If you're expecting a refund, you won't be assessed a penalty for filing late as long as you file for an extension. However, if you owe the federal government money, it's still due April 15, 2013.

Remember, April 15th is only the deadline for federal tax returns. Iowa tax returns aren't due until April 30th.
