FDA finds problems at compounding pharmacies

Posted:

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials continue to find safety violations at compounding pharmacies, similar to the New England pharmacy that produced products tainted with meningitis that killed dozens and caused hundreds to become sick.

Inspections of 31 compounding pharmacies that make what should be sterile products reveal several issues. These include black particles floating in vials of medicine, rust and mold in clean rooms and worker clothing violations.

These compounding pharmacies do not have to pass the same tests for safety that the FDA requires of drug manufactures. Something the agency is looking to change.

After the FDA inspections, several firms voluntarily recalled their products and some even suspended production.

On April 16th, the house energy and commerce subcommittee will hold a hearing to discuss reasons the FDA did not take a more forceful action against the New England compounding pharmacy before the tainted medication that caused the meningitis outbreak.
