Athlete of the Week: Lindsey Kite

Jesup senior Lindsey Kite has gotten used to running just about anywhere she can.

Kite says, "We run on the cement, sometimes in the gym, in the hallways."

She didn't say the track because right now Jesup doesn't have one. The J-Hawks will be getting a new surface next year, but that doesn't really help right now

Kite said, "It's unfortunate that we don't have a track to run on, but we're just going to do with what we have, go out, still go strong, and we'll be fine."

Being fine is a large understatement. Two years ago Lindsey brought home the school's first track title in 20 years, winning the class 2-A 800 as a sophomore.

As a junior she repeated in the 800 while adding a relay title anchoring home the J-Hawks 4 by 8 team.

Kite said, "It was nice to get to share it with everyone else, and my teammates. Our coaches were really happy because we were so used to getting second."

Jesup head coach Lisa Loescher says, "Coming the year past we just missed out on a state championship, so it was really a big deal for our track program and those kids as well."

Now she's got a new challenge with Jesup dropping to class 1-A this year.

To get another state title, Lindsey will have to get past 3 runners that beat her at the Drake Relays last year, but she's not one to shy away from competition

Loescher said, "She knows there's really good competitors out there, and she wants to compete against them to see where she fits in. If they happen to beat her, that just makes her want to go after it more."

And Kite says, "You're a champion. You have to compete a little bit better. You have to show how you got that."
