UPDATE: Girl Scout Council votes to redevelop Camp Conestoga

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois (GSEIWI) Council voted for the latest recommendations dictating the future of four Iowa Girl Scout camps -- meaning at least one camp will stick around.

Board members approved the latest proposal calls to redevelop Camp Conestoga near New Liberty.

"They had all very carefully considered this proposal," said Outdoor Leadership Experience Manager for GSEIWI Valerie Harle.

"This was a hard decision because they wanted to do the best thing possible for the girls," said Harle.

"Plans should include modern and rustic elements, as well as buildings equipped for year-round use and ADA accessible facilities wherever possible," the Girl Scouts' website stated. "Our new GSEIWI resident camp should meet the program and outdoor educational needs of today's and tomorrow's girls."

"A task force of girls and volunteers from GSEIWI will be asked to participate in the designing, naming and planning of this project."

While those changes are made, Camp Little Cloud in Epworth will be the interim camp.

The long-term plans for the other three Iowa camps are less clear.

Harle said 2013 camps will continue as planned, and the GSEIWI expects to host more than 1,000 girls.

Camp Tahigwa, Camp L-Kee-Ta, and Camp Little Cloud will be used for troop activities, but parts of the property may be sold at a later date.

"Unfortunately, the public perception seems to be that this new recommendation will save the camps and is a big win for those who have worked for that cause," Save Our Scout Camps Media Representative Joni Kinsey Fields responded in a press release. "In reality, the new recommendation outlines dramatic changes, and includes the probability that a majority of the camp properties will be sold."
