HPV may be linked to lung cancer

A virus known to lead to cervical cancer may also trigger some forms of lung cancer.

Researchers examined tissue samples from lung cancer patients.

A small percentage had evidence that they were fueled by a strain of the Human Papillomavirus, or HPV.

Certain strains of HPV are known mostly for causing cervical cancer but are also linked to head and neck cancers.

Researchers say this new evidence may someday help target treatments for HPV-related lung tumors.
