Northeast Iowa Food Bank settling into new home

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

After a year of building, the Northeast Iowa Food Bank is finally in their new home.

Staff says the new place, which is at 1605 Lafayette Street in Waterloo, is more efficiently spaced out. In the past, they would have to turn away food because they had no place to put it, but that's not the case now.

"It's just so much fun to see things come in and go to the place and not have to be moved five or six times before it goes out the door again," said Barbara Prather, Executive Director.

The new facility, which houses a distribution center, kitchen, food pantry and agency shopping area, is approximately 45,000 square-feet. The old facility was 27,000 square feet.

Staff says the new facility will allow them to more efficiently serve the estimated 40,000 people they serve from 16 different counties.

They estimate that they will be able to accept an additional 500,000 pounds of food per year because of the added space.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is only $250,000 away from raising the $6.4 million needed to pay for the building.
