Supreme Court coming to Dubuque

The Iowa Supreme Court will convene in Dubuque this week.  According to the Associated Press, Justices will hear oral arguments in two cases during a visit to Dubuque.

The court will convene Wednesday evening at Loras College to consider a civil case involving job protections for whistle blowers in health care fields and a murder case involving an Iraq war veteran.

The first involves a woman who was fired in 2008 from a Dubuque assisted-living center after she alleged that colleagues falsified training documents. She sued for wrongful termination, and a jury awarded her $357,000.

An appeals court ruled that companies that operate health care facilities cannot fire employees who report potential violations of safety regulations.

The second case involves veteran Christopher Thompson, who's appealing his second-degree murder conviction in the 2010 shooting death of girlfriend Angela Gabel, at their home near Monona.
