Wynette Mills of Waverly released her first book four years ago. It was based on her oldest grandson, Jared. She's now spreading the word on her second book. This one is based on her other grandson, Wade.
"I have five grandchildren and one book based on each child," said Wynette Mills.
Wynette Mills' grandchildren range in age from two to 13. The entire series of books is called Nana and Me.
She said the stories are largely based on activities she does with the grandchildren.
"The first two books were done when the boys were around kindergarten age, so they have a simpler message. It deals a lot with respect for nature and taking time to spend with your children and enjoy the outdoors," said Mills.
Nana's Backyard Alphabet features her second oldest grandchild, Wade McLey. Besides being the inspiration for the book, McLey also gave some input to the story line and the illustrations.
"The first creation of me was quite funny. The ears were like (sticking out)," said Wade McLey.
The illustrations are done by Mills' son, Kevan. He lives in California and works as a production artist.
Wynette Mills is retired from Allen Hospital in Waterloo. She said what she really likes about this book is the poetic lyrics.
Wade McLey likes the page for the letter "V" because it talks about having a sweet treat.
Wynette Mills is creating a special memory for each of her grandchildren, and she hopes others also use her book as a way to create memories with their children or grandchildren.
The book is available online and at AJ's Toy Store in Waverly.
