Cedar Rapids mobile home fire leaves 3 homeless

Three people are without a home after fire broke out a Cedar Rapids mobile home on Thursday.

Crews were called to 4420 Bowling Street SW, Lot F5, at around 12:19 p.m. Thursday after neighbors reported seeing two men trying to put out a fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the back of the mobile home.

After entering the home, crews reported heavy fire in a bedroom and bathroom at the back of the home.

Public Information Officer Greg Buelow says Dana Teel, 50, and his son-in-law, James Stevens, 37, tried to put out the fire, but left before firefighters arrived.

Buelow says they aren't sure if either man was injured.

Penny Teel, 48, arrived home as firefighters were working to put out the fire.

Buelow says Dana, Penny and 12-year-old Gage Teel will be displaced from the home until repairs can be made. They are being helped by the Grant Wood Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Buelow says a cat and bird were rescued from the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
