MANCHESTER (KWWL) -

Thousands of people are flocking to Iowa waterways now that it is trout fishing season.

The Department of Natural Resources began stocking Iowa streams with trout on April 1.

At Bailey's Ford, near Manchester, there were dozens of people waiting to catch some trout.

"This is awesome to come out and see the people especially today the first stocking day. Everybody is excited to get out," said Randy Mack, DNR Hatchery Technician.

Nicole Meyer was so excited to get fishing, she spent her senior skip day at Bailey's Ford.

"Just the game of them just chasing you around and finally being able to reel one in," said Meyer.

The trout going into Bailey's Ford came from the Manchester Fish Hatchery. In fact, all of the trout the DNR raises are hatched in Manchester.

Mack says the DNR can get 5,000 eggs with just one 10-pound female trout.

He says trout need cold water to survive, but not too cold -- about 30 to 65 degrees. That's why stocking the streams in April is ideal.

Mack says the trout can survive in the hatchery because no matter the weather, the water is the right temperature.

"We capture the water right as it comes out of the spring, so it's 50 degrees all year round," said Mack.

Mack wants to encourage everyone to get out and fish, but he says people will need a fishing licence and need to pay a trout fee to fish for trout.
