Waverly native signs professional soccer contract in Australia

A Waverly native is now playing professional soccer.

Derek Oelmann signed on with the Woden Valley Football Club out of Canberra, Australia.

Oelmann started playing soccer at a young age.

"It will always be his first love," said his sister, Heidi Oelmann.

Oelmann's soccer experiences are extensive during his years at Upper Iowa University.

In a release from the university, Oelmann is referred to as the "most prolific goal scorer in Upper Iowa men's soccer history."

According to the news release, Oelmann led the Peacocks to 37 wins during his four years at Upper Iowa University and was named the 2011 Upper Iowa Senior Male Student Athlete of the Year.

Oelmann is also a former assistant coach for the University of Minnesota men's soccer team.
