GUTTENBERG (KWWL) -

A fire in a Guttenberg apartment complex on Monday appears to have been started by "mishandled cigarettes," officials announced Wednesday.

The Guttenberg Fire Department was called to 523 South First St. at 1 a.m. Monday for a working structure fire in an apartment complex.

First responders evacuated all residents and brought the fire under control quickly, according to officials.

Investigators said the cause of the fire appeared to have been started by mishandled cigarettes on or near a couch located in a rear enclosed porch of the complex.

Officials believe the fire was accidental.

Fire damage was contained to that rear porch. No injuries were reported and property damage was minimal, according to officials.

Residents of one apartment adjacent to the porch were displaced, but all other residents returned to their apartments at around 3 a.m. Monday.

The Guttenberg Fire Department was assisted by the Garnavillo Fire Department, Guttenberg Ambulance and the Guttenberg Police Department.
