Field of Dreams opens for new season

DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -

In Eastern Iowa, one famous baseball field opened for the season this weekend. For years, the field of dreams movie site has attracted thousands of people to Eastern Iowa. But soon, that site will be undergoing some changes.

Sunday was Dennis Orten's first time at the Field of Dreams movie site. He was in Dubuque with his wife when they decided to make the trip to see the field.

"We have been wanting to stop over here. I have never been here. Seen the movie many times, but we happened to be in Dubuque eating lunch and well that's only 20 some miles away so we thought we would drive over." said Orten.

It's the first weekend the Field of Dreams movie site opened under the new ownership of Mike and Denise Stillman. In 2011, their company, Go the Distance Baseball, LLC. purchased the property. The company plans on building a 24- field youth baseball and softball tournament facility. Friday, Go the Distance Baseball had just completed the property's site plan.

"The site plan took us a little bit longer then we envisioned just because the terrain of the site is a lot more hilly then the whole team originally thought." said Stillman.

The longer process was due to results revealed in a soil borings test completed in January. The test revealed there was quite a bit of rock under the farmland, more than expected.

"We had to go ahead and accommodate for that, when we planned where the fields would be which shifted where the fields are laid out." said Stillman.

According to Stillman, the shift will allow the view of the ballpark to be unlike any other place in the United States.

"It's just the way that the terrain is that will make it such an interesting development." Said Stillman.

Stillman plans to begin construction for the new All-Star Ballpark Heaven project later this spring. She also reiterated the Field of Dreams movie site is going to be the same as it is, but she says the ghost players may return to the field this summer.
