Unknown cause of explosion and fire at Cedar Rapids fiber plant

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is investigating what caused an explosion and fire at a fiber plant Friday morning.

Greg Buelow, Public Information Officer for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says crews were called to J Rettenmaier USA at 725 41st Avenue Drive SW shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday.

Buelow says two employees working on the second floor thought they smelled smoke. He says they investigated the smell, but found nothing.

After the employees had walked to the other side of the plant, Buelow says a dust explosion occurred, sparking a fire.

Buelow says the sprinkler system knocked down the fire.

Firefighters arrived and worked to put out hot spots.

No one was injured.

Buelow says the company takes waste oat hulls and processes them to be used as filler in food products.
