Explosion outside Cedar Rapids home; Des Moines man injured

A Des Moines man was injured Thursday morning when work he was doing outside a Cedar Rapids home triggered an explosion.

Greg Buelow, Public Information Officer for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says 41-year-old Howard Russell, an employee of Q3 Contracting of Des Moines, was disconnecting a gas line from 3600 Skylark Lane SE when the explosion happened.

The homeowner, 44-year-old Dawn Stephens, called 9-1-1 at 11:17 a.m. to report that there was an explosion outside her home and Russell was asking for help. She said she saw a ball of flames outside near her deck.

Buelow says Stephens got out of the home safely with her three dogs.

Firefighters arrived and were able to keep the fire from spreading to the inside of the home.

MidAmerican Energy was called in to shut-off the gas which had been leaking for over an hour.

Buelow says Russell was taken to Mercy Medical Center by a private vehicle before firefighters arrived on scene. He is reported to have burns on his hands.

Buelow says Q3 Contracting was relocating gas mains in the neighborhood.

The incident remains under investigation.
