Johnson County roads building damaged by fire

The Iowa City Fire Department says the Johnson County Secondary Roads building at 4810 Melrose was damaged by fire on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived on scene at about 4:51 p.m. to find flames shooting from the building that houses offices and is also used for vehicle storage.

Battalion Chief Brian Greer says several small explosions in the garage area kept crews from attacking the fire from the inside.

Fire departments from Coralville, Hills, Solon, West Branch, Swisher, Tiffin, Riverside and Lone Tree were brought in to assist with the fire and to answer other calls within Iowa City.

Greer says the fire was under control by 5:39 p.m., but crews remained on scene through the night to put out hot spots.

The fire is believed to have started in the garage area, but the cause remains under investigation.
