Transportation Security Officers at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids discovered a loaded firearm in the carry-on bag of a passenger during a screening on Saturday.
The firearm found -- a .380-caliber Taurus -- was loaded with seven rounds. The passenger also had a magazine loaded with five rounds in the carry-on.
This is the first firearm found at the Eastern Iowa Airport this year.
"This is a good opportunity to remind passengers that firearms and ammunition, along with firearm parts and realistic replicas, are always prohibited in carry-on bags," said TSA spokesperson Carrie Harmon in a written statement.
Nationwide, TSA officers found about 1,550 firearms in passengers' carry-on bags in 2012. As of the end of February this year, TSA had found 225 firearms at checkpoints across the nation.
There were no firearms found at the Eastern Iowa Airport in 2011 or 2012.
