WATERLOO (KWWL) -
About 30 volunteers are stationed in four eastern Iowa community to offer free tax assistance.
Until April 15th, tax assistance volunteers are scheduled to be at the Waterloo Salvation Army each Monday and Wednesday. The volunteers offer free tax help to the elderly and people who are in the low to moderate income range.
"We do not define elderly or low-income. Let your conscience be your guide," said volunteer Dave Lewis.
The free tax help is funded by the IRS. It's nationally sponsored by the AARP Foundation and locally sponsored by RSVP, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
"I can't say enough about what a good job the volunteers do. How devoted they are to people. They're willing to go the extra mile. If for some reason there's a little glitch in doing the return, they work it out," said RSVP Director Sheila Bohr.
The goal is to help people who aren't familiar with the tax code and can't afford to pay someone to help them file.
"We're not in competition with the professionals. We never want to be viewed that way, but we are here for those that benefit by not having to pay out of pocket to have their taxes filed," said Bohr.
No appointments are needed at the Salvation Army location in Waterloo. You can just walk-in between 8:30 a.m. and about 3 p.m. Sessions typically take about an hour and 15 minutes.
"They need to bring last year's return. That's one of the first things because in order to do Iowa returns there's something on the federal we need for this year's return. They need to bring all those things in an envelope that says 'Important Tax Documents' in side like 1099R for retirement income and W2 for wage income," said volunteer Dave Lewis.
Every volunteer must pass a certification test to help with the program. Unless there are special circumstances, the volunteers e-file the taxes immediately.
"These folks really do appreciate it," said Lewis.
