DNR confirms February's fiery semi crash cleaned up

It's hard to forget the semi on fire dangling off of Highway 218 last month.

Environmental Program Supervisor with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Joe Sanfilippo confirmed Friday the crash site has been cleaned up.

Sanfilippo said clean-up crews from Davenport were initially worried the diesel fuel would run off into nearby storm sewers that have access to the Cedar River.

He said the river has been tested and was not contaminated with what he estimates could be about 300 gallons of diesel fuel.

"The cold weather kind of helped because it kept the diesel fuel from going deeper into the soil. The fuel hit that frost layer and just stayed on top of it," he said.

Sanfilippo said the trucking company would likely have to cover the bill for clean-up, though he did not have any idea of how much that would be.

The semi driver was able to escape his fiery truck, but was cited for failure to maintain control of his vehicle.

Police say the driver, Victor Ivantsov, of St. Louis, MO was driving in the southbound lane of Highway 218 when it crashed on the bridge above Washington Street last month.
