Coralville man arrested after firing shot into vehicle

Coralville police say they arrested a man Thursday morning after he fired a shot into a parked vehicle.

Chief Barry Bedford says officers were called to 914 14th Avenue at around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday after someone reported a rifle being fired into a vehicle parked in the driveway.

Bedford says that once officers arrived, they identified the man as Michael Frederick Bell, 56. He says Bell had gone into the home before officers arrived.

Police say Bell's son was able to take the rifle away from his father before running from the area with a friend.

Bell's son told officers that Bell still had access to a shotgun inside the home, according to Bedford.

After making contact with Bell on the phone, officers were able to take Bell into custody at 1:11 a.m. Thursday without incident.

Bedford says officers recovered numerous shotguns and rifles along with ammunition from the home.

Bell is charged with reckless use of a firearm and second-degree criminal mischief.
