Three evenings a week, Penie Aalderks teaches Zumba fitness classes at Bethany Bible Chapel in Cedar Falls -- for free.
Aalderks knows from personal experience some people struggle to lose weight and keep it off.
About five years ago, she decided she wanted to get healthy. She began eating better and exercising with a trainer. She said the weight came off.
"Eighty pounds in nine months," said Aalderks.
But Aalderks said she struggled to lose the last 15 pounds and to keep all the weight off. Then she found Zumba, which is a dance-type of fitness.
"I smiled through the whole workout and laughed," said Aalderks. "It was fun. I did not feel like I was working out."
Aalderks enjoyed Zumba so much, she got licensed to be an instructor and began teaching in 2010.
"Teaching makes me have to be at class. It makes me accountable, so that's one of the reasons I love to teach, too," she said.
Tara Sagers, who nominated the fitness instructor as "Someone You Should Know," said Aalderks is an energetic teacher who makes working out fun.
"(She's a) fun-loving, bright and cheerful person, and really will do anything for anyone," said Sagers.
There's no fee to attend any of the Zumba classes taught by Aalderks, but many people do donate the suggested $1 to help Aalderks cover the cost of downloading music.
"I just love what I do, and I don't want people to have to pay a lot of money to come and enjoy a fitness workout," said Aalderks.
Penie Aalderks said Zumba dance fitness is all about having fun while getting fit.
"I love to dance, and I love to share my passion for just moving your body," she said.
She said fitness changed her life, and she hopes her classes help change other people's lives, too.
Zumba classes are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Bethany Bible Chapel on Rownd Street in Cedar Falls.
