CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids man was convicted of four child pornography charges in federal court Friday.

A jury found James Sumner, 49, of Cedar Rapids, guilty of one count of receipt of child pornography and three counts of possession of child pornography.

The verdict was returned Friday morning after six hours and 30 minutes of jury deliberation, according to the U.S. Northern District Attorney's Office.

Sumner faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five year in prison up to a maximum of 50 years in prison, $1 million in fines and at least 5 years on supervised release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

Sumner was convicted of using the Internet to download child pornography between 2007 and 2008. He was also convicted of possessing child pornography on CDs at his residence between 2007 and 2011.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Sumner was taken into custody and will remain in custody until he is sentenced.
