Local Parish Reacts to New Pope

A new leader of the Roman Catholic Church was elected earlier than many local Catholics expected. However, the consensus among many parishioners at St. Stephen the Witness Catholic Student Center on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa is that the cardinals of the papal conclave, and the Holy Spirit, elected the right person.

Students and community members assembled for Wednesday night Mass at St. Stephen's where they prayed for their Church's new leader, Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, or Pope Francis I.

Francis has been praised for his humility, wearing the most simple papal attire while first appearing in front of the onlookers at St. Peter's Square. He is also noted for his record of identifying with the poor, as he lived in a small apartment and used public transportation as he presided at the cardinal-archbishop of Buenos Aires.
