Marion rodeo clown found guilty on federal drug charge

A Marion man, who worked as a professional rodeo clown and bullfighter in local and national rodeos, has been found guilty of a federal drug charge.

Rory Meeks, 55, was found guilty on Friday of conspiracy to manufacture marijuana after a three-day trial in Cedar Rapids.

Court documents show that Meeks would plant marijuana along corn and soybean fields in rural Jones County each spring.  Meeks would tend to the plants in the summer, then work with others to harvest them and process them in the fall.  They would then sell the marijuana over the fall and winter.  They say Meeks was involved with growing over 1,000 marijuana plants from 2004 to 2011.

A sentencing date has not been set.  Meeks faces up to life in prison and a $20 million fine.

Meeks was acquitted of one count of manufacturing marijuana.
