Sunday rain, snow create mess

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The snow started to fly around 7 p.m. Sunday night, and big wet flurries coated the city of Waterloo in a hurry.

But long before the snow started falling, it was warm enough that a lot of snow already on the ground melted. Combine that with the heavy rain we got, flash flooding was a concern in many areas.

Orange barricades blocked off a lane of traffic along Broadway Avenue in Waterloo Sunday, as rainfall made the road impassable.

Just up highway 218 in North Cedar, Merv Claussen saw water slowly rising around his home.

"The garage door was getting water up against it so I thought I'd go out and look.  I noticed anti-freeze jugs were floating around and the water wasn't going away from the driveway," Claussen said.

So Claussen didn't want to take any chances, and took steps to protect his property.

"I had to get sandbags on the window because the water was up against the window well," said Claussen.

In Buchanan county, some residents of Meadowwood Apartments were stranded.  A drain got clogged, flooding the parking lot.  A few cars stalled out in the deep water.  With a shovel and pump, one man tried to help clear out the mess, leaving residents wishing the water would go away as quickly as it came.

"I hope so. Hopefully it don't go in the buildings because it's about up to that building there," said Sue Danehy of Hazleton.

By nightfall Sunday, wet sloppy snow coated Waterloo, quickly icing roads caught some drivers off guard, causing accidents.

While all the standing water and snow created some headaches, there was also a little fun to be had.  A Janesville viewer sent us some video of her kids kayaking through their front yard.

The rain and snowfall will certainly be good for Iowa's snowfall, but is also leaving many folks even more ready for spring!
