Fareway Dietitian: Spring Cleaning Your Food

The first day of spring is Wednesday, March 20 and more than 77 percent of Americans take part in some kind of "spring cleaning".

Taking an inventory of your food is a great way to save some money. Try to plan recipes around foods that you need to get rid. Soups and casseroles tend to be great dinners to add miscellaneous ingredients.

Spring cleaning

-Canned foods: 1 year

-Pasta: 12 - 18 months

-Unopened flour: 1 year

-Opened flour: 6 months

-Condiments (salad dressings, ketchup, olives): 1 year

-Remember FIFO: First In, First Out

-When in doubt, throw it out

Now is also a good time to clean and sanitize:

-Cutting boards

-Kitchen surfaces

-Refrigerator (inside and out)
