The Iowa Legislature is halfway through this year's session, and at the end of the first "funnel week." That means new bills that haven't made it out of committee are dead until next year.
Among the bills that are still active include The Cousins' Law - also known as the Iowa Missing Children's Act. The bill was introduced after last summer's abduction and murder of Evansdale cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins. This is a bill designed to improve police response when children are reported missing.
Other bills still active past the funnel include whether to keep information about who owns a gun permit private and the elimination of straight-party voting during elections. There's also an anti-bullying bill, a bill addressing the placement of elderly sex offenders in nursing homes, and also a bill to decide whether a court can sentence a minor to life in prison without parole for first degree murder.
Bills that didn't make it past funnel week include a bill to ban traffic cameras, another to outlaw all forms of distracted driving, and one to legalize medical marijuana. Also not passing the funnel - a bill to bring back the death penalty - which was also introduced after the missing girls case.
