WATERLOO (KWWL) -
What happened in Vegas made big news in Eastern Iowa for a couple of Peak Performance Taekwondo club members. 14 year-old Morgan McGarvey and 15 year old Courtney O'Connell both captured medals at the prestigious U-S Open Taekwondo Championships in Las Vegas.
McGarvey won her division --becoming the first Iowan to win a US Open title since another club member Trent Thompkins won gold back in 1997.
While O'Connell captured a bronze medal in her biggest taekwondo competition so far.. and what made it even more impressive is that Courtney was recovering from the flu-- and McGarvey was nursing a ankle injury. And they did it facing some of the best competition in the World.
Morgan McGarvey is the top ranked 14 year-old in the country at her weight class--- she captured the Canadian Open last June--- and is on her way now to compete in the German Open later this week...
While Courtney is beginning to make her mark on the national and international stages-- and she is ranked among the top 3 in her age and weight class in the United States.
Peak Performance head coach Russ O'Connell says both girls have bright futures.
