The Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team came to Des Moines with dreams of a state title. Those dreams came to an end when the top ranked Vikings fell to Harlan 67-56 in the opening round of the class 3A state tournament.
Max Kearns scored 18 for Vinton-Shellsburg, but it wouldn't be enough. Harlan used the strength of a 23-10 third quarter to roll by the Vikings. The Cyclones held on in the fourth to advance to Thursday's semifinals.
The loss by Vinton-Shellsburg was their first of the year and they finished their campaign at 24-1.
