Dubuque city council to consider allowing pets in parks

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The Dubuque city council will consider a new ordinance that would allow cats and dogs in city parks on a leash.

The council will discuss the ordinance at a meeting on Monday.

Petitions supporting and opposing the ordinance have gained more than 1,000 signatures on each side of the spectrum.

A city ordinance was enacted in 1969 banning pets in parks.

The parks commission voted earlier to recommend the council allow pets in the parks and on trails.

The commission does believe pets should be excluded from the arboretum, a golf course and a recreation complex.

Opponents say they believe it's a child safety issue and fear children could get bitten by dogs.

Supporters say most large cities allow pets in parks on leashes, and Dubuque should do so as well.
