Iowa PTA addresses mental health and kids

How can kids who have mental health issues get the services they need?

That was the subject at a forum between parents, educators, and mental health experts Saturday morning. A community discussion on mental health took place in Cedar Rapids.

Experts say more than 10,000 children in Linn County face a potential mental health disorder. They say less than half will receive the services they need.

The discussion ranged from services available for kids to what the state can do to make getting services easier.

"This topic touches each one of us," said Susie Weinacht, Iowa PTA Executive Director. "This concern touches each person. It doesn't matter if your child is in school. Your grandchild could be in school. You could be an educator. You could be a legislator working on these issues. Everyone advocates and that's what this is about is advocacy."

Experts say it's important to help children get the services they need. They say Adverse Childhood Experiences can lead to health problems as an adult.
