New Bluehemia celebrates Cedar Rapids Blue Zones Project

People in Cedar Rapids celebrated being a Blue Zones Demonstration Site Saturday.

There was a New Bluehemia rally in the city's New Bohemia neighborhood.

Blue Zone Demonstration Sites are cities working to help their citizens live longer, healthier lives.

The concept is based off a book that identified the Power 9 principles that lead to longer lives, from moving naturally to putting family first.

"For Cedar Rapids this means a lot of great things," said Kristy Staker, Cedar Rapids Blue Zones. "It means we're going to transform our community and the biggest thing about this is we're going to change our environment so that we cab make the healthy choice the easy choice."

Cedar Rapids was selected as a Blue Zones Demonstration Site January 30th along with Marion and Iowa City. Waterloo and Cedar Falls were named sites last year.
