Health Plus: Balance class

Covenant Wellness Center is working to keep the elderly on their feet.

One out of three adults 65 and older fall each year, which means you or your parent or grandparents are at risk of serious injury.

At 74, Bonnie McConnell is active.

The Waterloo woman says exercise protects her in ways you might not expect.

"I walk every day—at least six days a week, and I do Zumba twice a week, and those two things help with balance," McConell said.

Covenant Wellness Center is holding balance classes to keep the older generation on their toes.

"We had a few classes in the past and have had great success and a lot of our past participants say they can go out and do things now that they would not have done before," Med-Fit Assistant Deb Brekunitch said.

Among older adults, falls are reportedly the leading cause of injury death so even the fear of falling can keep people from staying active.

"And then you're more apt to fall, just because you're afraid. Not so much that it has happened before, but then you get nervous," Brekunitch explained.

Another "Matter of Balance" class is being offered at Covenant's Cancer Treatment Center starting March 4.

The 8-week session costs $10.
