FRYfest to extend a third day

Nothing brings people to Johnson County quite like the Hawkeyes.

"Everyone shows up to Iowa City 36 to 48 hours before the first game," said Josh Schamberger, President of the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

On the day the biggest Hawkeye of them all, Hayden Fry, celebrated his 84th birthday, came the announcement the biggest Hawkeye party will extend into Sunday.

"It'll turn that two night minimum into a three or four night minimum," Schamberger said.

Fun for fans, but better for business.

"It'll just mean more people coming in and staying longer and enjoying the Coralville area," said Debbie Bullion, General Manger of Heartland Inn.

More than 20,000 people have come into Coralville each of FRYfest's four years.
Bullion says the hotel she manages is already more than half-booked for next year's event.

"Typically that first game is not always the busiest game of the year but FRYfest has definitely added another dimension and we have picked up rooms from it," Bullion said.

The annual Hawkeye celebration has pushed hotels over 90% occupancy every year.  An extra day this coming fall will only help business.

"Its wonderful business for all the hotels," Bullion said.

All the more reason to celebrate this football season in Johnson County.
