Iowa lawmakers to consider bill concerning voter identification

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Iowa lawmakers are considering a bill that would require voters to show voter identification at Iowa voting places.

A committee will consider and discuss the legislation during a Thursday meeting.

Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz supports the measure and filed very similar bills in the Iowa House and Senate.

GOP lawmakers are also backing Schultz and his push for voter identification, saying it's needed to prevent voter fraud.

Democrats raised concern over the prospect of this measure, saying there is little fraud and that Republicans just want to discourage voting by minorities and elderly -- demographics which tend to favor Democrats.

There are also concerns that these rules could slow down the vote counting process.
