The Cedar Falls School Board let their superintendent resign in a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday night.

In a unanimous decision, the board voted to let Mike Wells resign, after first making a motion to terminate his contract and being persuaded against it by Wells and a roomful of supporters.

Wells will finish out his contract for this school year, according to the board.

Their decision comes two days after Mike Wells, in his first year heading up the Cedar Falls Community School District, sent a resignation email to district officials and then rescinding it at the board's Monday night meeting.

Cedar Falls Patch claimed to have received a copy of Wells' resignation email. It can be found here.

Wells spoke to board members Wednesday night after the board made a motion to terminate Wells' contract and the motion was seconded.

His speech received applause from the packed audience in attendance at the meeting, some of whom held pro-Wells posters and gave him a standing ovation.

A few board members also praised Wells after his speech, while others spoke against him.

Wells then requested the school board amend their motion to let him resign instead of being fired.

The board took a brief recess to discuss the matter with the school district attorney and then voted to take back the motion so Wells could resign.
