Miller makes quick impression at UNI

Posted:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Ethan Miller was far from a five-star athlete coming into college, but while at Central College, things turned around in a hurry.

"I was recruited for football at Central, and so I played there for just two years. Then I quit to focus on track because I was having success that I did not think I would have," Miller said.

After four years at Central, Ethan came to UNI without any intention of competing as a Panther.

UNI Track & Field coach Dan Steele says, "He was looking at his post-collegiate opportunities and he just wanted to start focusing on his post-collegiate decathlon, and then we found out that he had indoor eligibility, and he had interest in competing for us, so we were more than happy to facilitate that."

Miller adds, "I didn't think I would ever be able to compete at the D-1 level in track and field coming out of high school. I didn't even think about it."

Miller has quickly developed into one of the country's top multi-event athletes and has recorded some of the best scores in UNI history, which says a lot for someone who fell through the cracks in the recruiting process.

"Well, he had no credential to speak of coming out of high school. He was a good solid athlete from a very small school, and there's no reason to think that he was going to be this good", says Steele.

"I would definitely say that playing football at Central did help me a little bit, physically, and just being active year-round", adds Miller.

Though the indoor season is nearly through, Miller's career as a runner appears to be far from over.

Coach Steele, who coached some future Olympians while at Oregon says of Miller, "I think he could be a very very successful post-collegiate decathlete. I think he's got Olympic potential. I think he could potentially be one of the best decathletes in America."
