Street crews work overtime in winter weather

Tuesday's snow caused slick roads across the Cedar Valley and plenty of clean-up efforts across the state.

"We knew that we were going to get some precipitation, but we weren't expecting what we got," said Operations and Maintenance Division Manager at the City of Cedar Falls Brian Heath.

"You just have to take it as it comes and kind of play it by ear."

Heath said road crews in Cedar Falls started salting and plowing streets at about 9:00 A.M. Tuesday.

Later in the afternoon, crews were told they would need to work overtime.

According to Heath, drivers have been using leftover salt and sand from last year. He said the City of Cedar Falls had about 1,500 tons leftover which has come in handy this year.

"We're probably getting close to using what we had from last year, and we're starting to move into this year's allotment, so we're in pretty good shape yet," he said. "We've got plenty of material to get us through the winter."
