Waterloo man pleads guilty to drug and gun charges

A Waterloo man accused of shooting another individual pleaded guilty to drug and gun charges in Cedar Rapids federal court.

Amos Deering, Sr., 31, was convicted of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, and being unlawfully in possession of a firearm as a felon, domestic abuser, and drug user, according to the United States Department of Justice.

Deering was accused of shooting Shane Coffer, 29, in the torso on Oct. 19.

Coffer survived, and Deering remains in custody until his sentencing.

Deering faces a mandatory five years in prison and more than $1.5 million in fines and $300 in special assessments.
