Cedar Rapids man arrested for high-dollar jewelry theft

A man who allegedly stole five pairs of earrings worth more than $15,000 from a Cedar Rapids jewelry store was arrested Friday and charged with a second, similar theft as well.

Jayson Law, 27, of 1247 4 Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, was charged with first-degree theft after allegedly stealing five pairs of earrings valued at $15,692 from Rogers Jewelers at Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids police report Law entered Rogers Jewelers on Feb. 19 and asked to see the earrings before grabbing them and fleeing the store. Employees gave chase, but lost the subject in the mall, according to reports.

As a result of that investigation, Law was also charged with second-degree theft for a similar theft at Helzberg Diamonds in Cedar Rapids on Jan. 24.

In that instance, Law asked to look at three diamond tennis bracelets valued at $4,497, then running out of the store when employees lost sight of him, according to police.

Law was taken to the Linn County Jail.
