ROCKFORD (KWWL) -

A short ceremony was held Sunday to remember a Floyd County deputy killed in the line of duty.

Deputy Levi Bowers was shot and killed in 1916 but there was no record of it with the Floyd Co. Sheriff's Office.

Sunday, Floyd Co. Sheriff Rick Lynch and Deputy Bowers great-great grandson Thomas Dyer took part in a small ceremony at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford to place a grave marker at Bowers final resting place.

"Before today it was just names and numbers, but...today I'm really feeling the...essence of what went on that day and the essence of who my great grandfather was," said Dyer.

The Floyd County Sheriff's Office plans on getting a plaque made and placed at a park in Rockford this spring, permitting the project gets approval from the City Council.
