Iowa City reminds property owners to remove snow promptly

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The City of Iowa City is reminding property owners to clear snow from sidewalks, curbs, curb ramps, storm drains and fire hydrants after more than 5 inches of snow was dumped on the city Thursday and Friday.

City officials said property owners must clear snow and ice from the full width of sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours after the snow has ended. Residents may report problems by calling (319) 356-5152.

The city is also asking property owners to continue shoveling "for an extra couple of feet" to clear crosswalks and curb ramps so pedestrians do not have to walk over piles of snow to get to the street.

If they are able, property owners are also asked to check and clear storm drains near their property. Those who are unable to do so are asked to call the Streets Division at (319) 356-5181.

When snow is piled up, fire hydrants will also need to be cleared. The City of Iowa City is asking property owners with fire hydrants on their property to clear snow away two feet in each direction to allow fire and water departments easy access if needed.

If a fire hydrant has been hit by a vehicle, or if residents notice water running down the street, they are asked to call the Water Division emergency number at (319) 356-5166.

Iowa City received an average of 5.5 inches of snow, according to Meteorologist Denice Pelster.
